‘This book is a record of my fifth photographic journey through Africa. I started in Kenya, then swung down to southern Africa through Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands, crossed the Limpopo to explore Mpumalanga, the Drakensberg, Grahamstown, the Overberg, the Hantam Karoo, and finally made my way to Luderitz in Namibia. I love getting involved in the happy and sad essence of the vast southern African lands. There is a haphazard unpredictability that runs through all these different areas, and travel in these parts requires a developed sense of humour.

My pictures and the stories that go with them are about the somewhat strange, the odd, the trivial, and the funny. I love getting myself into storytelling-picture-taking situations.Mostly they come along unintentionally, simply happen along the way, but sometimes one must work at them, coax situations into developing and changing. This book is about the freedom of the road, just going for the sake of going, and the pictures that happened or were made to happen, along the way; there is no bother about time and place, for beyond each horizon lies another horizon. Life without adventure is, indeed, no life at all’ Obie Oberholzer.
